Archie Hawkins & Mary Flynn 1929.

Capture Archie Hawkins & Mary Flynn.

Caroline Murray sent Historic Hamilton a picture of her Granny and Di which she believed was taken in 1929, and she asked if we could share it with everyone. As always, we are looking for your old family photos and stories to document and keep in our archives.

I wanted to do a wee bit more for Caroline, and I decided to look in to her family’s Ancestry to see what I could find.

Caroline’s Di was named Archie Hawkins, a coal miner from Blantyre and he was born on the 10th of June 1905 at the family home of 44 Calder Street. He was the son of Thomas Hawkins who was also a coal miner and Mary McNair. Archie’s Father Thomas, was an educated man because when his son was born he personally signed his name on the Birth Certificate. A lot of people at this time could not read or write and they signed things with a X.

Staying with the Hawkins family Archie’s parents, who would be Caroline’s Great Grandparents were married at Blantyre on the 30th of August 1901, and they lived in Blantyre the rest of their days. Sadly, Caroline’s Great Grandfather Thomas, died at the age of 35 on the 11th of August 1916, and the cause of his death was cancer of the stomach. Caroline’s great grandmother Mary McNair had at least three children with her great grandfather Thomas, and they were called Janet, Thomas and her Grandfather Archie.

As you can imagine these would have been tough times for Caroline’s Great Grandmother so she later re-married to a local man named James Glen who was also a Coal Miner. This man James Glen died in Blantyre in the year 1932 and he was 61 years old and she is left a widow once again.

Caroline’s great Grandmother Mary McNair died at the age 71 on the 21st of November 1947, and she died at her house which was 9 Wallace Place in Blantyre.

When I looked at Caroline’s 2 x Great Grandparents – still staying on the Hawkins side of the family, they were called Robert Hawkins and Elizabeth Fortheringham and they were a family from Hamilton. They married on the 31st of December 1873, at the Hamilton Roman Catholic Chapel. Robert was a Carter and Elizabeth was a Farm Servant.
Caroline’s 3 x Great Grandparents were called Robert Hawkins & Grace Baillie who were born around the year 1855.

Going back to Caroline’s Di and Granny I found that they married on the 18th of July 1927, at the Roman Catholic chapel in Burnbank. After they were married they moved to 184 Glasgow Road, where they started their own family and soon after they had 8 children who were, Thomas, Patrick, Archie, Robert, Mary, Barbara, Elizabeth and Jenny.

Mary Flynn was a Burnbank girl who at the time was working as a Brick Worker. When they met, Archie was living at 16 Miller Street in Blantyre and Mary was living at 26 Bertram Street in Burnbank with her parents.

I found that Caroline’s Great Grandparents were called Patrick Flynn and Mary Ann Connelly and Patrick was working as a Coal Miner and Mary was a domestic servant. Patrick was also a Blantyre man and his address when he married was 51 McAlpine’s Buildings and Mary Ann was living at 130 Glasgow Road.

Patrick and Mary Ann later lived in Burnbank, and their address was 36 Hill Street, and in 1965 Patrick was now working as a Haulage Motorman. Mary Ann died on the 12th of September 1965, at Cleland County Hospital.

On the Flynn side of the family Caroline’s 2 x Great Grandparents were called John and Mary Flynn, Mary’s surname was also the same as her maiden name, and John was working as a foundry Labourer. On the Connelly side of the family Caroline’s 2 x Great grandparents were John Connelly and Catherine Weaver. John was working as a Brick layer.

I spoke to Caroline a bit further about her family and she was telling us that her Grandad’s nephew was called Tommy Hawkins, and Tommy had been the person who sculpted the depiction of Christ at Bothwell castle.

Caroline, I hope that I have given you a small insight in to your family History and thank you again for sharing your picture of your Grandparents.

  1. Wow “” I’ve done a bit of research on my Hawkins tree. I m from the same stock as Caroline but a different branch. My grandfather Charles Hawkins was the son of Robert Hawkins and Elizabeth Fortheringham I know that Charles married Mary McCann and started his family of 7 @ 20 Welsh Drive , High Blantyre. This was only round the corner from his parents houses in The Victoria St cottages near Main Street. I understand Thomas Hawkins and my grandfather Charles we’re brothers and both Coalminers Charles was born on 8 Dec 1894 And second youngest it seems with reference to 1901 census. I have docs and newspaper articles dating to 1789 listing Charles Hawkins at its earliest in this area. His status was married to Margaret Gray and titled portioner of Bothwell This is the start of this tree in Scotland. He was married previously in New York with one daughter Anne Hawkins born America He continued to extend his family with brothers of Anne who were named Robert William Hawkins born 1789 in Hamilton, John Hawkins born 1786 in Hamilton and moved to Dumfriesshire to marry
James Hamilton Hawkins born 1793 in Hamilton. I’m not certain but I think Robert Hawkins who married Grace Bailey was the don of Robert William Hawkins this family are in the census all the way and lived in Almada Street. So did Robert and Grace. James Hamilton Hawkins lived round the corner on Burnbank Rd I think 24 which is next door to the Vaults and directly across from a famous man? I remember this being told to me as a child. I can say hand on heart that all Hawkins family’s in Hamilton and Blantyre are 98% related to this line and in 1820s to 1901 the multiplied to be huge in the Town Most moved to the States and some to Australia but I do know Thomas and Charles stayed in Scotland and I do have proof of 2 older brothers dying tragicly and sad with coroners reports. Wull Hawkins and James Hawkins I still have contact with both sides Thomas and Charles lines in Blantyre. I have knowledge of being told Archie lived in Stanley pl in Burnbank and had family there? I have knowledge as well of Denis Hawkins. Possibly son of Archie. I know he moved to Wishaw and married and had family. I met his daughter Caroline once as she had been friends with my friend coincidence. I have loads of names for all these family trees most of are repeated and complicated to organise

    1. Hi Charles, thank you for getting in touch. I enjoyed reading what you posted. Did my story shed any new light on your family research?

I would like to know who died under tragic circumstances and when and where if you would like to share your info?

I can confirm that James Hamilton Hawkins did live across the road from a famous person. The house belonged to the parents of the world famous explorer DAVID LIVINGSTON. If I sure if who he was, then do a quick Google search. 🙂

      Thanks again, Garry 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      1. Hi ,
The names with tragic circumstances were William (Wull) Hawkins , coal miner , he was one of the oldest children from Robert Hawkins and Elizabeth Fortheringham Hawkins residing at Gardener Terry Blantyre at the time? I think this was a pit accident. And the other was James (Jim) Hawkins. Who had been a missing person and suffering depression because of an injury he had at the Steel works. I know his body was recovered at Broomalaw riverbank in Glasgow. Off the top of my head this must have been between 1940 to 1950 as my uncle John had told me he often was given pocket money from him when he was at Auchinraith primary school on Craig street Blantyre. I know he died because of drowning but know it was said in our family that he done it deliberately because of difficulties coping with not being able to work. This is was logged in the Glasgow coroners report. The James Hamilton Hawkins family also had tragic news of losing their son Charles at the age of 33 in a pit accident too. His is in news paper reports and also coroner of Hamilton.
Great to read up on this as it already fitted what I knew. And also filled in the Links I needed. To relate the families I know in person.

  2. So happy to be reading about aunt Mary and uncle Archie Hawkins. Aunt Mary was my mother’s sister (My mother was Barbara Cushley nee Flynn) I have started tracing my roots on the side of my maternal gran (Mary Ann Connolly) and have got as far as her mother (Catherine Weaver and John Connolly) then the trail has gone cold. Can’t find any record of their marriage or their deaths and last address I have is 130 Glasgow Road and this is from my grandparents marriage certificate in 1903. Is there anyone out there who can take me further, I’d be so grateful.

    1. Marian as far as I know your great grandparents were married in Sligo in 1877 according to the birth certificate of Mary Ann Connolly. Therefore I think we will need to be looking at Ireland’s roots website to get back any further.
